What this course is about

Renewable energy projects run under contracts that eventually end. This course helps communities prepare early for what happens next: decommissioning, repowering or extension, and what that means for land, jobs, the community trust and the local economy.

Who it is for

Community members, trust members, landowners, municipal planners and project staff.

What you will be able to do

  1. Find and read the contract and approval terms that decide what happens when a project's contract ends.
  2. Explain the decommissioning duties that may sit in a project's environmental authorisation.
  3. Ask the right questions about what happens to the community trust and its commitments.
  4. Contribute to planning a local economy that outlasts any single project.

Preview: the first two minutes

Module 1 · Introduction · 2 min

Mma Mashaba, holding a loaf of bread, overhears two men talking at a rural village shop.

Animated scene (fictional, Moya, some years from now): a rumour says "the wind farm is leaving next year". A trustee, a landowner and a municipal planner each hear it, and nobody knows if it is true.
